holding on

She clings to her memories, claw marks on the edges as they fade with the passing of each day. A moment, a year, a feeling. Flashes of memories flicker in her mind, triggered by a song, a look, a smell, she is transported back. She can hear her best friend's eleven year old voice, feel her high school boyfriend's hand in hers, taste the bitter cigarettes in her mouth.

Heart quickening, she sinks into the memory, reliving each part and savoring, turning it over and over, admiring the nooks and crannies. Neon lights flashing and music booming, kissing by the lockers, notes passed between class, twirling the phone cord around her finger, lazy drives with the windows down and no need to talk.Closing her eyes, the memory fades into the blackness of her eyelids.
